A djembefola is one who gives the djembe voice.  In the hands of a master, a drum comes alive.  It's voice sings, laughs, whispers, electrifies.  Sidy Maiga is just such a player.  For over 16 years, he has been sharing the joy of drumming with his students and audiences around the world.

Sidy Maiga wins 2011 MacColl Johnson Fellowship

Sidy Maiga has just been named one of three winners of the MacColl Johnson Fellowship for music composition.  This is a highly competitive prize that is given every three years.

This prize caps off an extraordinary year for Sidy.  First, he won the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Folk Arts Fellowship.  Then, RISCA also gave Sidy a grant for this year's Afrika Nyaga Drum and Dance Festival. On May 14, Sidy released his new CD Malidén. And in July, his son was born. 

Here's to 2011.  We can't wait to see what 2012 has in store.
